Emory Tremayne is a communications specialist and systems designer who became fascinated with a simple question: why does ChatGPT feel brilliant one moment and like it’s actively sabotaging you the next?

After chasing more than a few shiny objects down the rabbit hole and enduring copious amounts of polite word salad, Emory set out to turn the tables on AI to uncover its mysterious patterns.

Emory approaches technology with equal parts scepticism and delight, combined with a deep interest in how interaction shapes behaviour, and how a thoughtfully designed question can change everything.

By approaching AI as a tool that reveals how we think, decide, communicate, and occasionally spiral, Emory discovered that, as with all conversations, whether with people or machines, interactions dramatically improve when you work with them rather than try to make them work with you.

A researcher, writer, former Microsoft contractor, depressingly inflexible yoga student, and enthusiastic tinkerer of things that probably shouldn’t be tinkered with, Emory is fascinated by the evolution of ideas and finds deep satisfaction in unravelling how to optimise systems.

Thinking With Chat™ grew from the intersection of curiosity, structure, humanity, and a firm belief that knowing which question to ask often wins the prize.

The lovely Miss G.G. is indulgently cared for by her devoted Kahu, Emory.

Writing with AI

Yes, I wrote this book with the assistance of AI.

Yes, I used AI extensively throughout the process, but not to write the book for me. I wrote the ideas, developed the teaching methodology, designed the learning journey, and tested every concept over many months. AI became my thinking partner, not my ghostwriter.

I used it to challenge my thinking, refine explanations, test examples, identify gaps, improve clarity, and, perhaps most importantly, find typos. Unfortunately, my typing skills are such that I seem to be exceptionally gifted in this area!

Every chapter went through multiple conversations, revisions, and real-world testing on multiple platforms before it made it into the book.

In many ways, this book is also a demonstration of the very skills it teaches. It's about learning how to work with AI while keeping your own ethical standards, judgement, experience, and voice firmly in the driver's seat.

Many people use AI like this:

Idea → Prompt → AI → Text

I use it like this:

Idea → My Experience → AI Dialogue → Reflection → Testing → Revision → More Dialogue → Teaching → Final Writing

That's a fundamentally different creative process.

My goal was never to let AI replace my voice, but to use it to sharpen my thinking while keeping responsibility for every idea I chose to include.

The originality of this book doesn't come from every sentence being written in isolation. It comes from the framework, the pedagogy, the methodology, the sequencing, the examples, the judgement, and the thousands of decisions about what to keep, what to discard and how best to explain Conversation Control using familiar, real-world examples that make complex ideas easier to understand.

I don't write with AI. I write through a disciplined conversation with AI. And that's what this book is all about, so you can too.

If you can hear my voice in these pages, then the process worked exactly as designed. AI helped me think more deeply, but every idea was selected, filtered through my own experience, values and judgement, and then refined before it became part of this book.
